Resum

This vocabulary was originally designed as a study aid with a linguistic slant for the subject of Roman Law. Its intended readership, students at the University of Valencia, were thus to gain the benefit of a useful instrument providing them with a deeper understanding of the terminology of Roman law in both the languages used at the university. However, considering that until now no work existed that met this description, I decided that it would be preferable to make it more widely available. In this way I hope to increase bilingual knowledge of the basic terminology employed in Roman law among students outside this particular university, and indeed other users. As regards contents, this is above all a basic vocabulary in accordance with the purpose for which it was intended. The criteria for the selection of terms were as follows: 1. Legal terms frequently used in Roman law, and in private law, bearing in mind that the book's users are likely to be students; 2. Terms specific to Roman law; 3. Proper nouns belonging to jurists, emperors and so forth, in addition to place-names and other words relating to the Roman historical and cultural context; 4. Frequent expressions of a legal nature referring to certain legal nature referring to certain legal institutions or acts. The title of the work thus sums up the criteria followed in putting it together. It should be mentioned that, since the book deals with two modern languages, Latin terms have not been included. In total, definitions are given of more than 1,500 words and expressions.
